WHO WE ARE

ABOUT OUR CHOIR

The Hackney Community  Gospel Choir was established in an attempt to reach out to people from every walk of life within Hackney. Also, we hope to reach those who may feel isolated or excluded from the community. It is a wonderful place for families to participate in an activity together. It helps to relieve stress and brings the community together.

Now HCGC is building on its success of his by organizing concerts at the end of every 9-10 week session and fundraising within Hackney. HCGC is open to everybody giving more people an opportunity to find their voice in a community setting.

HCGC is not just about singing, although we do a lot of it! It’s about meeting people, finding new friends with a common interest, growing in confidence, finding a voice, caring for one another, performing songs we love to sing and raising money for charity.”

The songs are mostly gospel and are uplifting, songs that anyone would love to sing! We usually support the members by sending them the songs to learn in advance of the practice.

WHO IS THE HCGC CHOIR DIRECTOR?

Anu is the Choir Director of The Reapers Choir (www.thereaperschoir.co.uk). She writes, arranges and produces some of their songs. However, her first love is to sing, and she has been doing this for over two decades. She has sung with and in many different choirs, groups, solo artists including work with Lay Witnesses for Christ International, Bishop Jason Nelson (USA), Michael Bethany (USA), Carren Richards, Visual Ministries Choir, Re-Formed and The Sower Production Theatre Group. She has also ministered internationally including in the USA, Italy, Ghana, and Nigeria. She is trying to develop herself further by learning how to play the piano.  She is a professional choir director, vocal trainer, songwriter, producer, public and motivational speaker and engages in mentoring work in the community.

She practiced as lawyer (barrister) for 14 years before these other aspects of her life overtook that profession!

She decided to lead HCGC when the need to extend and share her gift arose. She is experienced in teaching choirs in the community and brings a variety of her life experiences into her choir directing. She teaches the choir by her “sing and repeat” method. It is not necessary for choir members to read music although she teaches the rudiments of musical composition during her direction. She will also teach performance techniques such as good breathing, blending, good pronunciation and punctuation, stage presence, body language in performance, connecting with your audience, etc. Learn more about Anu at her website –   www.anuomideyi.com
